The data of students at a major Australian university was stolen, the university has confirmed.

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) has suffered a data breach. 17 current students and 50 former students had their personal information compromised in the attack. Data included names, date of birth, tax file numbers, residential addresses, UniSuper member numbers, bank account details, and BSB numbers.

The university stated that it is unaware of any of the data being exploited, however, its cybersecurity team has been working to prevent further issues.

The attack impacted over half of the university’s 4,500 staff members. A storage drive was identified as being compromised during the attack and several printers were found to be producing suspicious messages. The university is offering support to those affected through independent identity protection services and its own wellbeing support.
